A fellowship program named after the state’s first Black congresswoman will no longer be under the purview of the state Democratic Party.

Shortly before voting was set to begin on state party elections on Saturday, Dan Blue III, a practicing attorney whose father was recently booted from Senate caucus leadership, sent a cease and desist letter to party leaders informing them that Eva Clayton no longer wanted the NCDP to run a fellowship program in her name and that any remaining funds should be transferred to new program stewards.

The move comes on the heels of an Anderson Alerts report this week of the state party’s decision to suspend the program aimed at recruiting college students from historically underrepresented communities and a donor that stepped in shortly thereafter to preserve the program.

The North Carolina Black Alliance and Advance Carolina will now oversee the fellowship program. In a joint statement, Eva Clayton, heads of both advocacy groups, fellowship co-founders and the head of the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus (of which Blue II is a member) issued a blistering rebuke of the party.
