Republicans expand school vouchers, compel local sheriffs to cooperate with ICE
On Wednesday, GOP lawmakers gave final approval to a bill eliminating the waitlist for the Opportunity Scholarship program and forcing sheriffs to collaborate with federal immigration authorities.

North Carolina Republicans on Wednesday voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a bill that will soon eliminate the school-voucher waitlist of about 55,000 students and require local sheriffs to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Under House Bill 10, families across all income brackets will have an at least partially subsidized private schooling option.
While a law had already provided for that, state funding didn’t meet demand for the Opportunity Scholarship program, thus prompting the state leaders to prioritize approvals for lower and middle-income households. GOP lawmakers pledged to make families whole. With the passage of HB10, eligible families will qualify for a tuition reimbursement from their schools.
