Berger faces primary challenger
On Thursday, Rockingham Co. Sheriff Sam Page announced his run for state Senate, reiterated his opposition to gambling and discussed why he felt now was the time to take on the state's top Republican.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page announced on Thursday that he’ll primary the state’s most powerful Republican, Senate leader Phil Berger.
Berger, 72, has been in the Senate since 2001 and run the chamber since Republicans took control in 2011. Berger has not yet said whether he’ll be seeking reelection.
Page first told the Raleigh News & Observer about his candidacy on Thursday and confirmed his announcement in an interview with Anderson Alerts.
“What I've learned as sheriff over the past 27 years is I never forget who I work for,” Page said. “I remember my bosses are the citizens of Rockingham County.”
