Alphabet aerobics: Lawmakers troll each other over hurricane recovery, public records exemptions
Bills named after former Gov. Roy Cooper and current House Speaker Destin Hall would speed up homeowner hurricane recovery projects and compel disclosure of redistricting records.

Last week, Republicans took aim at former Gov. Roy Cooper’s handling of hurricanes Matthew and Florence.
Under House Bill 222, or the “C.O.O.P.E.R. Accountability Act,” the state would spend $217 million to complete homeowner recovery projects.
“HB 222 will finally get Eastern NC the help they deserve,” GOP state Rep. Brenden Jones wrote on X on Friday. “It’s time to do what Cooper wouldn’t and close this thing out!”
On Wednesday, Democrats responded with Senate Bill 242, or the “H.A.L.L. Accountability Act.” Democratic state Sen. Terence Everitt, a former House representative, named the bill after House Speaker Destin Hall.
The measure would repeal a provision buried in a 625-page budget from 2023 that removed a requirement for lawmakers to disclose redistricting records.
