HB2.0? GOP lawmakers file bill limiting transgender restroom use
In 2016, NC lawmakers unveiled a bill to require transgender people to use the restroom of the gender assigned at their birth. Nearly a decade later, a more narrowly-tailored restriction is filed.
On the final day of bill filing, a group of North Carolina Senate Republicans unveiled a proposal on Tuesday that would require transgender people to use the restroom of their gender assigned at birth in certain facilities.
It’s a less sweeping version of House Bill 2, the 2016 measure that restricted restroom access in government buildings and prompted substantial public and corporate resistance.
Unlike HB2, Senate Bill 516 doesn’t cover many government buildings. But it does apply to public schools, domestic violence shelters, prisons and other places that receive government funding.
