NC group sues over at-risk military and overseas ballots

The North Carolina League of Women Voters and a group of impacted voters have sued to block the state from going forward with giving such voters a 30-day cure window.

The North Carolina League of Women Voters filed a class-action lawsuit early Monday in an effort to prevent state elections officials from moving forward with a forthcoming 30-day shot clock for anywhere from 1,409 to 5,509 military and overseas voters who cast a ballot in last year’s election without providing photo ID.

The lawsuit doesn’t apply to the 260 voters included in Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin’s “never resident” protest, Jennifer Rubin, the group’s president, confirmed.

It instead focuses on a broader cohort of votes that could decide the outcome of the race, as Griffin looks to overturn an apparent 734-vote defeat to Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs.
