I asked all nine of North Carolina's 2024 gubernatorial candidates what they made of provisions in a newly enacted state budget allowing lawmakers to sell and destroy records. Here's what they said:

A provision in North Carolina's new state budget exempts lawmakers from public records laws and allows them to sell and destroy communications.

Exactly one week ago, a new North Carolina budget was enacted. Among the provisions receiving the most criticism: Allowing current and former state lawmakers to sell and destroy their own communications and unilaterally decide what, if anything, they want to disclose in response to public records requests.

The budget also repeals a state law that had given the public access to legislative records and communications related to redistricting.
