NC elections officials to contact 194K voters with missing registration information
Under a plan from NCSBE Executive Director Sam Hayes, 98,000 would have to cast a provisional ballot if they don't provide their driver's license or last four digits of their Social Security number.
North Carolina elections officials will soon mail out notices to roughly 194,000 voters to update their voter registration information by providing their driver’s license number or last four digits of their Social Security number.
About 98,000 voters would have to cast a provisional ballot if they don’t provide such information, while 96,000 would retain their ability to vote as normal.
Sam Hayes, executive director of the State Board of Elections, presented the plan during a Tuesday meeting. It received unanimous support from the board’s three Republicans and two Democrats.
“I believe this will instill confidence in our elections,” Hayes said. “Election integrity and voter access are just two sides of the same coin."
Under the plan, 98,000 voters would receive a notice next month, while 96,000 voter get a mailer later in the summer. A third notice would go out after allowing time for a response.
The move comes on the heels of a lawsuit from the Trump administration and a court order stemming from last year’s election protests filed by Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin.
Hayes said he’s spoken with U.S. Department of Justice officials and that the department has “tentatively signed off” on the plan.
