How North Carolina's congressional hopefuls are doing financially
The March 5 primary will feature five hotly contested Republican primaries. Here's how the candidates are faring in the money game
North Carolina congressional candidates on Wednesday submitted their latest campaign finance reports. The filings, which cover fundraising from October through December, show which hopefuls entered 2024 with the biggest gains and which had the most ground to make up.
There are five congressional primaries I’m tracking: The 1st, 6th, 8th, 10th and 13th Districts. Of those five contests, the 1st District is the lone general election tossup. Let’s take these races one at a time…
1st Congressional District
In eastern North Carolina, two Republicans are looking to secure their party’s nomination to advance to the general election tossup against Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Don Davis.
Republican businesswoman Sandy Smith raised over $181,000, which includes a $100,000 personal loan. Retired Army Col. Laurie Buckhout took in $1.27 million, which includes a $1 million personal loan.
