Lee tapped to Senate leadership post
Sen. Michael Lee of New Hanover County now becomes the third-highest ranking member of the chamber.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday tapped Sen. Michael Lee of New Hanover County to fill the leadership post of former Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton, who resigned last week to take a job as UNC-Chapel Hill's new vice chancellor and general counsel.
Lee has swiftly ascended in North Carolina politics, with key roles in shaping state budgets, abortion restrictions and school choice measures. He was first sworn into office in 2014 to fill a vacancy and has since won reelection in all but the 2018 election cycle.
“I look forward to working with every caucus member to help accomplish their priorities and build on the last 14 years of successful policy achievements,” Lee said in a statement.
