How Stein failed to sway members on veto overrides
North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday voted to override eight of Gov. Josh Stein's 14 vetoes, despite efforts by Stein to convince some members otherwise.

North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday overrode eight of Gov. Josh Stein’s vetoes. Here’s what passed over the governor’s objections, how Stein tried to persuade Democratic members, and other tidbits from the day:

Four Democrats went against Stein:
Rep. Shelly Willingham of Edgecombe County: 6 overrides
Rep. Carla Cunningham of Mecklenburg County: 5 overrides
Rep. Nasif Majeed of Mecklenburg County: 2 overrides
Rep. Cecil Brockman of Guilford County: 2 overrides

Willingham:
Willingham said Stein personally called him on Monday night to ask him to sustain his vetoes. Willingham declined, saying his position would remain unchanged.
“Governor Stein, he’s just getting to know me,” Willingham said. “I think now he knows that whatever I say I’m going to do, that’s what I’m going to do. So he could take that to the bank.”
