North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday overrode eight of Gov. Josh Stein’s vetoes. Here’s what passed over the governor’s objections, how Stein tried to persuade Democratic members, and other tidbits from the day:

Dem Defections

Four Democrats went against Stein:

  • Rep. Shelly Willingham of Edgecombe County: 6 overrides

  • Rep. Carla Cunningham of Mecklenburg County: 5 overrides

  • Rep. Nasif Majeed of Mecklenburg County: 2 overrides

  • Rep. Cecil Brockman of Guilford County: 2 overrides


Tidbits:

Willingham:

Willingham said Stein personally called him on Monday night to ask him to sustain his vetoes. Willingham declined, saying his position would remain unchanged.

“Governor Stein, he’s just getting to know me,” Willingham said. “I think now he knows that whatever I say I’m going to do, that’s what I’m going to do. So he could take that to the bank.”
