House approves bill creating evenly split county, state elections boards
Previous efforts by Republican lawmakers to create an evenly split state elections boards have been found unconstitutional. In 2018, voters also soundly rejected the idea. Will this time be different?
North Carolina House Republicans on Tuesday approved a bill to change the composition of local and state elections board ahead of the 2024 election. If Senate Bill 749 were enacted, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and future governors would be stripped of their appointment powers.
Since 1985, North Carolina governors have appointed NCSBE members from a list given to them by the party chairs of the two political parties having the highest number of registered voters, Democrats and Republicans. No more than three members are allowed to be from the same party, effectively giving the governor’s party majority control of the state board.
