Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin on Monday requested a second recount in the state Supreme Court race. As of Monday afternoon, he trailed Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs by 643 votes, according to data from the State Board of Elections. The latest margin represents a 91-vote gain for Griffin from a deficit of 734 votes he had going into the recount process.
As of 11 a.m. Monday, the NCSBE showed five counties as not yet official: Granville, Mecklenburg, Northampton, Randolph and Wilson. Counties were supposed to have concluded their recounting of votes on Wednesday, but Wilson County was still recounting ballots early Monday, thus delaying the overall process.
Under state law, a second recount request must be made “within 24 hours of the completion of the first recount.”
