Former Gov. Pat McCrory NOT running for local county board seat, as NC candidate list showed
A candidate list from the North Carolina State Board of Elections wrongly showed McCrory and others running for an at-large seat on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners in the 2024 election.
*UPDATE: This story was updated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4 to reflect that the North Carolina State Board of Elections said its candidate list was inaccurate due to a testing mistake made by a Mecklenburg County Board of Elections worker during training. An earlier version made available to paid members was published at 2:51 a.m. Monday.
Former North Carolina Republican Gov. Pat McCrory won’t be seeking office in 2024, despite a list of March 5, 2024, candidates released by the North Carolina State Board of Elections on Sunday that said otherwise.
McCrory isn’t running for an at-large seat on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.
Pat Gannon, a spokesman for the state elections board, attributed the mistake to a Mecklenburg County Board of Elections employee.
“In preparations for candidate filing, an employee at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections used the wrong data site for candidate filing training,” Gannon said in a statement. “This resulted in test data showing up in the first candidate lists published on the State Board website. These lists should not have had any candidates in them, and the test data has since been removed. Candidate filing begins at noon today, and candidate lists will be updated routinely throughout the filing period, which ends at noon on Friday, December 15.”
McCrory previously lost a bid for U.S. Senate in 2022, losing in the primary to now-U.S. Sen. Ted Budd by 34 percentage points. Before that, he served as governor from 2013 through 2016.
McCrory was among those who successfully worked to get the No Labels Party officially recognized in the state, though he has said he will remain a Republican. The state’s candidate file and voter registration database show McCrory listed and registered as a Republican, and running for office in 2024 as a member of the GOP.
