Court blocks GOP effort to create evenly split state, county elections boards
In a win for Gov. Roy Cooper, a three-judge panel approved the governor's request to block implementation of the new law.
A three-judge panel unanimously voted to block implementation of Senate Bill 749 ahead of the 2024 election.
The law seeks to strip Gov. Roy Cooper of his ability to appoint elections board members and would create evenly split state and county elections boards composed entirely of members chosen by state lawmakers.
The measure also would move the State Board of Elections from the Department of Administration to the Secretary of State’s Office.
