North Carolina state Rep. Ashton Clemmons is in her fifth year as a state lawmaker. The Guilford County Democrat has steadily risen within her party and is now the second most powerful Democrat in her chamber.
As a new legislative session moves into a period of greater activity, Clemmons is looking to work with Republicans to address learning loss and mental health challenges K-12 students incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Clemmons is a former school teacher and administrator and now has three children in elementary and middle school. I spoke with her recently about a new bipartisan proposal that she’s working on with Republican state Rep. Jeffrey Elmore.
