Bill to increase penalties for violent protesters heads to Cooper
The North Carolina Senate sent Gov. Roy Cooper a bill seeking to crack down on looting and violent protests. But some worry the measure could stifle free speech.
North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Senate voted on Thursday to send a bill to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper that would increase penalties for looters and violent protesters. The bill passed by a vote of 27 to 16.
The proposal is a renewed effort of a 2021 bill that Republican House Speaker Tim Moore released in response to protests in downtown Raleigh that turned violent and caused property damage.
