Lordy, have I made a lot of friends on the campaign trail in the last 48 hours. I’ll be on WUNC at noon today to talk more about what went down, but let’s just get straight to the news, shall we?

Roll Call

  1. Can Michael Whatley name a Canes player?

  2. How Speaker Destin Hall could boost transparency in the legislature

  3. Drama over early voting sites

  4. Treasurer Brad Briner’s missed investment opportunity

Rock You Like a Hurricane

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley arrives at a campaign event in Zebulon on Wednesday, June 3.

It’s early Wednesday morning, the sun comes out.

Last night, Michael Whatley’s social media was buzzing pretty loud.

Roy Cooper’s team was purring, scratching their heads.

So what is wrong with an AI sin?

If you aren’t familiar with what’s taken place over the past few days, allow me to catch you up on what may be the silliest political story of the spring.

Whatley is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. His campaign made an unforced error hours before the Hurricanes hosted their Stanley Cup Finals series opener Tuesday by posting a pair of graphics to his social media channels.

North Carolina U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley posts to social media before the Hurricanes game on Tuesday.

The problem: The individuals depicted in them didn’t appear to be actual players on the Hurricanes roster. Several social media users, including Democratic Senate opponent Roy Cooper’s campaign team, jumped into Whatley’s comments to ask who the players were supposed to be.

In a normal world, this would be where the story would end. Some campaign staffer posted something silly on a candidate’s social media pages to make their boss look relatable and engaged in a newsworthy topic. But it didn’t end there.
