Analysis: 2 big takeaways from the first GOP gubernatorial debate
On Tuesday, three Republicans running for governor participated in a debate held by the Wake County Republican Party. The candidates largely took aim at the GOP frontrunner not in the room.
Former U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, State Treasurer Dale Folwell and former healthcare executive Jesse Thomas addressed a small crowd of Republicans in Cary for the first debate of the 2024 gubernatorial primary. The event was held by the Wake County Republican Party and streamed on Facebook by Walker’s campaign.
The three candidates often directed their attention on the elephant not in the room: Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the frontrunner for his party’s nomination. Former state Sen. Andy Wells also didn’t attend the event.
The three GOP debate participants took advantage of the opportunity to introduce themselves to voters and set up a contrast with Robinson.
